Barred owl Patient #21301 is a bit of a celebrity. He caught the attention of the local news after being hit by a car on I-40 in Winston-Salem and then was rescued by a state trooper. He was admitted with a left humerus fracture last Thursday. The fracture was surgically repaired on Friday and he has been doing well since then. A Charlotte news station gathered some video footage of the bird and its physical therapy session this morning. It may not seem as rare and exciting as the snowy owl (in fact, it is our most common species with our most common fracture from our most common cause of injury), but we are thrilled that this specific patient has brought so much attention to our mission and that there has been such an outpouring of concern and support. You can read/watch the story here.Another interesting case in the past week - a barred owl, Patient #21299, was found stuck in a tree attached to fishing line. This is fairly common for barred owls. They like to hunt near water and they will get their wings and legs caught in fishing line that has been cut and is hanging from trees. What is abnormal about this situation is how the bird was attached - she had a fishing lure through her eyelid. And she is fine! There was obviously a small wound and some bruising but the fact that she did not do more damage to that delicate area is a miracle. We are currently monitoring her to make sure the tissue continues to look healthy, but so far it looks very promising. -- source link
