Two of the three hatching year barn owls were released over the weekend. This bird, patient # 20801, was admitted in July with a femur fracture and a de-gloved talon. Sixty-six days later, she is flying free. I do wish she had no decided to pose on a barbed wire fence. Maybe she thought it would make her look a little more stereotypical. Regardless, DANGER. We work hard not to release any of the birds near barbed wire but sometimes they find their way to it. Plus, barn owls require a very rural release (outside of Mecklenburg County, for sure), so barbed wire is almost a given within a mile of any site. This girl flew for a while before finding this spot. Other hatching year birds released during the past few days:an osprey from the Outer Banks, a broad-winged hawk that was admitted with eye trauma and a coracoid fracture,a barn owl that was hatched at CRC (by parents Harvey and Minerva),and a barred owl that was admitted with eye trauma. -- source link
