pixelunion-staff: User Spotlight | To Elsewhere We talk a lot about intersections here, especially the mixtures involved in visual arts. Mostly because we’re deeply, personally drawn to these fields, but also because they’re ubiquitous in digital publishing. One of the more common overlaps is that of photography and travelogue, with much of the best photography on Tumblr fueled by wanderlust. We found Remi Ray’s To Elsewhere a couple months ago, right around the time he began shedding belongings and and fixing his beastly machine up. For what, you might ask? Oh, nothing big, just cycling across the country. NBD. The impetus for Ray’s trip is a broad set of circumstances and desires, and worth reading verbatim. The short version is that he’s at a rare existential intersection of having the time and energy to do a very, very big and meaningful thing, one which benefits someone he loves—his sister Celine—in the process. Donations to his ride will go to the Connecticut Center for Child Development, which provides “a continuum of services for Individuals with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, and related disorders and other co-occurring disorders.” But it isn’t just about altruism and adventure either. Remi’s work on TE is also a mature and entertaining entry into the ever-growing digital canon of North American travel writing, featuring lengthy and insightful reflections, gorgeous photography, and (perhaps most importantly) a fetishistically detailed pack list. To Elsewhere sets a remarkably high standard in travel blogging, and it’s a joy to have our work be a part of it. Please check out Remi’s Crowdrise page for more info and to donate to his project.
