PRINTS NOW AVAILABLE! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/algenpfleger/johannes-voss-2018-magic-the-gathering-print-colleHello! Today we’re doing MtG archeology and traveling back what feels like a million years to… 2011. I had only been working as a freelance illustrator for a year at that point and was still trying to find my voice. Here’s the original commission text!ART DESCRIPTION:Color: White/Black spell (Orzhov guild)Location: A high tower/ledge, overlooking RavnicaAction: Show a shot of a hooded, cloaked figure (perhaps similar to the Orzhov ghost on p. 136B, but this figure is a living person, not a ghost). The figure is crouched on a stone ledge or outcropping of a high Ravnica building, overlooking the city. The figure is mostly turned away from us, but we can see that large, magical wings made from Orzhov-style stained glass have sprouted from his back (for stained glass reference, see Ravnica world guide supplement p. 300 & 307). The shards of light and dark glassalmost give the impression of feathers, and catch the light in dramatic ways.Focus: The figure with his magical glass-shard wingsMood: Mysterious, Gothic, eerieOh, and since I’m digging, here’s the sketch I sent in as well: https://imgur.com/gallery/noKBt7cThis was the second sketch I did, a previous one was done, then I decided I didn’t like it (since I felt it was too close to Vampire Nighthawk) so I started over. The perspective here is a little nod to the opening shot of Ghost in the Shell (obviously!). The sketch is (as you can see) very simple, I usually try to get the main focus of the image down in my mind, so the sketch then becomes an attempt to communicate “Hey, this is what I wanna do” in an efficient way. The painting itself then was basically two things: a big subdued foundation of support, all there to direct the viewer to the wings, and the wings.Anyways, if you’ve been looking for a print of this, go here! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/algenpfleger/johannes-voss-2018-magic-the-gathering-print-colleAND I also make CUTE TOKENS (you better believe it) https://www.patreon.com/johannesvossLet me know if you’re interested in more background info like this, it’s actually fun for me to look back on older pieces because I learn from it too :)Cheers! -- source link
