Americans spend more money on taxes than food, clothing, and shelter combinedI can speak from experience having lived in the Washington, D.C. metro area for a few years. I generally can get by making ~$15 an hour but then Uncle Sam comes along to take his 33%. Factor in federal income, state income, state sales, state property, gas, and sin taxes and my effective tax rate is >30%. That’s making a meager $30,000 a year (pre-tax). The government comes along and taxes me INTO poverty. -- source link
