H.J. Ward for “Spicy Adventure.” Until very recently, it was actually illegal to send pornography through the mail (Hayes, supreme moralist of the Hollywood Hayes Code, started as Postmaster General), and the definition of pornography was incredibly broad. So a very mild magazine type emerged in the 1920s called the “spicy” story, or “spicy adventure.” It was very mild by modern standards to pass the Postmaster-General’s tests - there is probably more sex in a modern romance novel than in a spicy adventure. -- source link
