Minimum Required Calorie Intake Calories. You have to eat X amount of calories and for sure you will lose weight. But how many calories should I eat? Is 1200 calories per day going to work for me and help me lose weight? Today I’d like to talk about the minimum required amount of calories to survive through the day. Going lower than that minimum which is personal for everyone will not be sustainable and healthy in a long term, and that’s what we do not want - we do not want to gain that fat back again. It’s called BMR, basal metabolic rate. It is the amount of calories our body burns at rest for its basic functions such as breathing, circulation, nutrient processing, cell production, and does not account for the calories you need to walk, talk, exercise, etc. If you have passionately decided to starve yourself with consuming 1000 cal per then this information is for you. How to calculate it? There’s an easy formula which I use: Women: BMR = weight in kg x 22 Men: BMR = weight in kg x 24 So, if your weight is theoretically 80 kg, and you’re a female, then your BMR is 1760 cal per day and that’s your bare minimum. Your body burns those calories while you eat, sleep, sit, and do nothing. When you do something throughout the day your body will burn some extra calories, depending on the level of your activity. Even if you have a sedentary lifestyle of a potato couch your body will burn approximately 300-350 calories extra. If my weight is theoretical 80kg, then going for 1200 calories per day isn’t really a good idea. I do understand the reason why a nutritionist or a trainer might tell you to eat only 1000 calories per day: because we underestimate the amount of calories we eat per day. If you’re really consuming that low amount of calories after a few days you’d be starving and thinking only about food. If you’re not starving you’re eating the amount of calories very close to the one you’re eating every day that’s why the weight isn’t going down.
