Georgia O’Keeffe decorated her living space as yet another manifestation of her comprehensive and coherent aesthetic. Just as in her art and clothing, she opted for clean lines and minimal detail. She particularly loved the interior courtyard door of her adobe house in Abiquiu, New Mexico, which she painted as an abstracted composition of flat squares and angles. When she posed for photos in that courtyard, O’Keeffe wore a white jacket over a red plaid cotton dress. Her silhouette and the pattern of the dress echo the forms of the courtyard, and the metal frame of an iconic modernist “butterfly chair” (designed by Jorge Ferrari Hardoy in 1938) adds another visual accent.Like so much else in her art and life, O’Keeffe’s white jacket looked simple yet was essential and personal to the artist. It was made by a French manufacturer of workers’ uniforms, but it shared the same sensibility as O’Keeffe’s handmade white silk dresses, white-on-white abstractions, and sparely furnished interiors.Posted by Jessica MurphyArtwork: Georgia O’Keeffe (American, 1887–1986).
