Struggling with mental health is all about trying to avoid experiences, like thoughts and feelings that we don’t like. That only creates more of those experiences at ever increasing levels of complexity and severity. Quite often, the way we approach treatment continues that pattern of trying to avoid and control experiences. We try every pill, drink every substance, wear every gadget, read every book, repeat every mantra, test every therapy, rub every crystal, sit on every meditation cushion–and yet, nothing seems to “work”. Maybe for a little bit we find some relief, but the thoughts and feelings always come back, they move on to some new uncertainty or a different feeling. And they should. It’s not because we’re treatment resistant. It’s because the “solutions” were just more of the same compulsions to avoid and control experiences, only more hard-fought shovel-fulls of mud taking us deeper into the hole. . . The way we got ourselves into the hole will not be similar to the way we get ourselves out. We can stop digging and climb out. -- source link
