dwimmerlaiks: Middle-earth History Meme: 1/5 Elves: Beleg Cúthalion Beleg Cúthalion was a Sindarin Elf serving under Thingol in the realm of Doriath during the First Age. Possibly one of the Unbegotten, he was one of the greatest heroes of the Elder Days; an unsurpassed archer, great hunter and captain of the Marchwardens of Doriath.Along with his friend Mablung, he was the only one of the elves of Doriath who fought alongside the hosts of the Noldor in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. He also took part in the Hunting of the Great Wolf Carcharoth. He later became teacher, brother-in-arms and greatest friend of Túrin Turambar and so became entangled in his Doom. When Túrin left Doriath, Beleg followed him into his exile to deliver the King’s pardon and convince him to return, taking with him the sword Anglachel forged by Eöl. Upon his arrival, with Túrin absent, Beleg was captured by the outlaws near Amon Rûdh, then bound to a tree and starved for three days until Túrin arrived to free him. Túrin declined the invitation to return, and so, after having brought the news of his decision back to Thingol, Beleg joined his friend and his band of outlaws. They situated themselves in the halls of Mîm the Petty-dwarf, and together took up the fight against Morgoth. The land became known as Dor-Cúarthol, the ‘Land of Bow and Helm’. When Mîm was captured by orcs, he revealed the outlaw’s position. All were slain except for Túrin, who was captured, and Beleg, who was left behind, although grievously wounded. He followed the Orcs into Taur-nu Fuin, where he met Gwindor, an elven survivor of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Together they recovered Túrin from the orc-camp where he was held, and carried his unconscious body away to safety. When Beleg cut Túrin’s restraints with Anglachel, the blade slipped and cut Túrin, awakening him. Disoriented and hurt after days of torture, he then wrestled the sword from Beleg, not recognizing his friend in the darkness, and killed him. -- source link
