iylshowcase: Back Focus - Bill Henson (1955)Bill Henson is an Australian contemporary art photographer. His works have been exhibited internationally in galleries such as Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Venice Biennale, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne or the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Henson is a visionary explorer of twilight zones, between nature and civilisation, youth and adulthood, male and female. The quiet melodrama of his photographs, and in particular his handling of light to create a transcendent effect, suggests a contemporary reworking of the “Sublime”. This concept, in which Nature’s grandeur provokes the conflicting sensations of astonishment, terror and awe, was central to the Romantic movement of the early 19th century.Trough Henson’s lens, his portraits could just as well be the protagonists of a 17th century Dutch masterpiece. Back in November, he released a new book entitled ‘Particle Mist’ which draws together works from three of his earliest photographic series. -- source link
