iylshowcase: Backfocus - Alex WebbAlex Webb was born in the USA in 1952. He majored in history and literature at Harvard University, while at the same time studying photography at the Carpenter Centre for the Visual Arts. In 1974, he began working as a professional photojournalism and he joined Magnum Photos as an associate member in 1976. Webb started in black and white but as colour photography was gaining institutional acceptance following William Eggleston’s show at the Museum of Modern Art (1976), he decided to change medium. “The world is a complex place and there are great dangers when you start looking at everything in terms purely of black and white.”From his early work in Haiti and along the United States-Mexico border, to recent projects in the United States Rust Belt, Webb left a legacy of images rich in composition.
