“In Out of Place: A Feminist Look at the Collection more than half of the 60+ artworks were on view for the first time—so I’m missing them all! However, I really wish I could stand in front of Ree Morton’s deep-yet-funny Regional Work #2 these days. This diptych from 1976 captures the sublime palette of a seaside sunset, a painting type with a long art history. Morton zooms into the ocean’s depths so we can see one of the unnoticed players of this storied art-historical theme: a swimming fish, painted in those same San Diego sunset hues. Both are framed by billowing curtains made in Celastic, lending them an equal sense of playful pomp. Morton’s macro-to-micro study of nature feels reassuring to me now, in the grips of human-induced suffering and angst." Posted by Carmen HermoRee Morton (American, 1936-1977). Regional Work #2, 1976.
