“As I’m spending more time than ever in my Brooklyn apartment, I find myself thinking about Do Ho Suh’s The Perfect Home II. The work is a full-scale fabric recreation of the artist’s former Manhattan apartment where he lived for nearly twenty years. He painstakingly stitched together every detail of his home—from light fixtures, crown molding, and air vents, to the kitchen sink and bathtub. It’s a beautiful and delicate love letter to the apartment he clearly felt a powerful emotional connection with for many years. It makes me think about the small details in my own apartment that I never noticed before. Like the small crack in my bedroom ceiling by the window and the uneven floorboards next to my kitchen. Maybe I’ll start sketching those details during this time of social distancing, to serve as a reminder of the space I live in and now no longer take for granted."
