I’ve been thinking a bit about this considering how many people have been reaching out for mental health support. No matter where you are on your journey, know that you have taken a brave step towards healing, even by just by thinking of getting additional support. So, what could be a few qualities you might be looking out for in a potential therapist?•Here’s a list of things that are outside of formal training that I thought could be helpful! Formal training doesn’t always paint the full picture, although it is definitely a pre-requisite. Please ensure that your therapist has at least a Master’s Degree in Psychology and is equipped to work with you in the area of your concern. Aside from formal training, there are some practices, skills or approaches that you can look out for. Feel free to ask a potential therapist about their qualifications, their approach, their experience in a particular area- you are allowed to know all of this before starting with therapy.•If after a few sessions, you do not feel like the therapist is the right fit, you can give them feedback and if things still don’t shift, you are allowed to change your therapist! We understand that human beings will connect to each of us differently and some therapeutic relationships may not resonate.
